I am a Graduate Candidate in the University Program in Ecology at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment.
My research could be concisely described as quantifying effects of environmental change through traits. To do this, I draw from the methods and theory of both trait-based functional ecology and biogeography. I use a combination of broad-scale observation, small-scale experiments, physiological measurements, and some light modeling to provide a mechanistic perspective of the effects of environmental change on species form, interactions, and functions. My goals are twofold: to advance ecology towards generality through mechanistics, and to ultimately provide mechanistic-based prescriptions for the conservation and restoration of imperiled ecosystems. I currently work in salt marsh ecosystems, but I am interested in any broadly distributed ecosystem, especially those with a dominant foundation species.
I have a M.S. in Biology, obtained in August 2018 from William & Mary and a B.S. in Ecology from SUNY Plattsburgh State University. Before entering academia I worked abroad for many years in the US Army. I am from the pristine mountains and lakes of Upstate NY.
